The late Brandon Lee’s family have expressed their horror following the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Halyna, 42, was accidentally shot with a prop gun on Thursday by actor Alec Baldwin and died as a result of her injuries.
The death came 28 years after actor Brandon, son of famous actor Bruce Lee, died when a shooting stunt went wrong while filming The Crow in North Carolina.
Following Halyna’s death, Brandon’s official Twitter page, run by his sister Shannon Lee, issued a statement addressing the incident.
It read: “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period.”
In Brandon’s case, he was filming a scene in The Crow where his character was shot and killed by thugs when he was shot in the stomach with a prop gun.
The actor who fired the gun believed that it was filled with blanks, but it later came to light that a fragment of a dummy shell had been left in the gun’s barrel.
Brandon was rushed into surgery after being shot, but despite undergoing hours of operations, the 28 year old was unable to be saved.
Halyna’s death occurred on Thursday on the New Mexico set of upcoming movie Rust.
Film director Joel Souza is also said to have been injured as a result of the shooting, and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Santa Fe Sheriff’s department has confirmed that actor Alec was the one to have fired the gun.
The police department said: “Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western Rust, October 21, 2021, when an 911 caller reported a shooting on the set.
“The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 63, producer and actor.”
“Ms Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel,” the statement continued.
“Mr Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Centre where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.”
