UK ‘formally confirms’ Brexit transition will not be extended | News

Gove announced the selection on Friday, incorporating: “The instant for extension has now passed”.

In a write-up on Twitter, he mentioned he had chaired a “constructive” meeting of the EU Joint Committee with EU Commission Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations, Maros Sefcovic. 

The social media message read: “I formally verified the British isles will not lengthen the changeover interval & the instant for extension has now handed. On January one, 2021, we will consider again manage and get back our political & financial independence.”

It will come after Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford, the 1st Ministers of Scotland and Wales, wrote to Key Minister Boris Johnson on Friday contacting on him to ask for the extension, stating it would be “extraordinarily reckless” to close the changeover in the new yr.

Meanwhile, checks on EU products coming into the British isles will be phased-in up coming yr to give businesses “time to adjust”.

The British isles had dedicated to introduce full import controls on EU products in January, but coronavirus has forced a rethink. Firms will now be able to defer customs forms and tariff payments for six months and some actual physical checks will be delayed until finally July.
