Another big name fashion chain store has confirmed it is closing its Teesside Park branch.

H&M says it has seen a rapid change in customer behaviour over the past few years that it can’t ignore which has led to the decision. Rumours began to circulate about the future of the store last month, when it was revealed staff were facing a risk of redundancy.

H&M confirmed it was in negotiations with Teesside Park but no further details were released at that time. Now, H&M have confirmed the decision has been taken to close the store, with the last trading day to be June 12. TeessideLive understands the store employs more than 20 staff members.

The clothing store has occupied a unit next door to Boots and close to JD Sports at Teesside Park for a number of years; it is central Teesside’s only remaining H&M after the brand closed its store in Middlesbrough’s Cleveland Centre last summer. The next nearest H&M store is at the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool, after that the nearest stores are Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle or York.

H&M say they continuously need to evaluate and develop their business to meet customer needs and offer the best possible shopping experience whether online or in physical stores. Sometimes, said the chain, stores need to be closed and this decision has now been made for the Teesside branch.

Customer behaviour is constantly changing, and we need to adapt accordingly. We want to be where our customers are. The physical store is still extremely important to us and will be a place for customers to shop, discover and be inspired,” said a H&M spokesman. “At H&M, we are constantly working to integrate physical and digital stores, we want to find the strength in each channel and make the customer journey smooth.”

Customers can continue to shop in the nearby stores, and as always on hm.com, added the spokesman.

The closure news comes a week after fashion chain Superdry confirmed it has shut its Teesside Park store for good. Customers had been asking if the popular clothing store was undergoing a refurbishment, after it shut the doors and hoardings appeared across several stores on the same stretch. But the chain has confirmed it is not planning to reopen its branch at the busy retail park. The nearest Superdry stores are now Newcastle, Metro Centre and York. House of Fraser in Middlesbrough also has a Superdry concession.

New stores are moving in, however. Primark has revealed plans to move in to a unit at the popular retail park between Middlesbrough and Stockton anda flagship Poundland store opened earlier this year. TeessideLive has contacted Teesside Park for comment.
